Abstract

This chapter discusses the changing nature of Africa–US relation and America’s interpretations of its role in Africa with respect to security, trade and investment. It starts from America defining the continent from the prism of its NATO allies during the struggle for independence to considering Africa as an ideological battleground during the Cold War era, and as a potent land for the spread of Islamic extremism during the post 9/11 era. This chapter argues that while the security concern of the United States is legitimate, the best strategy to reduce the danger of Africa as a global security threat is to help the continent integrate into the global production process through trade and investment.
