Abstract

The Ljubljanica River recharge area has been under investigation for some time. The first descriptions were made approximately 2000 years ago; and, up until the eighteenth century, studies were mostly focused on the intermittent lake on Cerkniško Polje. Early studies of the area around Planinsko Polje began with speleological investigations of the cave Planinska jama, as well as some other caves in the surrounding area. Later studies were supplemented by geomorphological and geological descriptions related to determining the polje’s development. Because of flooding, many studies were dedicated to studying the dynamics of flooding, the risk of natural hazards, and investigating the potential use of poljes for hydropower electricity production. The most current investigations involve the detailed study of groundwater dynamics and the monitoring of water quality.
