Abstract
Two features of the popular press are considered in the Introduction. The first is the claim that no other country has a tabloid culture quite like that which exists in Britain. Many societies have celebrity gossip magazines, trash TV, investigative journalism and politically motivated newspapers but the UK is unique in combining all these elements on a single platform. The second topic investigated is the way in which the tabloids have met the challenge of the digital age by going online and not erecting a paywall. A consequence of the switch from purchased paper to free digital editions is that the tabloids’ content reaches more people than before and a specific title now attracts a far more heterogeneous readership.
