Abstract
While most female local politicians belong to the local elite, they suffer from cycles of exclusion which start prior to their political career and extend beyond their election. In assessing these cycles of exclusion, this book aimed to restore the conceptual interest in women’s descriptive representation in Turkey, a non-quota country. It showed that differences between the political parties and distinctions based on local configurations not only explain the mechanisms of women’s exclusion but also account for women’s agency and individual as well as collective strategies to advance their careers and spur institutional change. Turkey’s case provided an opportunity to revise concepts such as intersectionality, biographical availability, and agency. It yielded several counter-intuitive conclusions with regard to the link between women’s representation and democracy.
