Part of the book series: Gender and Politics ((GAP))

Abstract

Who are the female municipal councilors? Most of them have strikingly similar profiles, situated at the intersection of privileges—they come from a well-off background, have a university diploma and professional career. However, firstly, these similarities are nuanced by the different family backgrounds and different patterns of political socialization among the female municipal councilors. Secondly, identical attributes (such as a university diploma or career as a lawyer) have different salience depending on the local context. Thirdly, women with unconventional profiles are also represented in local politics, even though they are fewer. This chapter also discusses the gendered dimensions of political resources, such as political experience, associational capital, or the fact of being a woman.
