Abstract

In this chapter, we illustrate Wittgenstein’s notion of immunity to error through misidentification and, with it, the phenomenon of the implicit de se. We discuss the linguistic relevance of the phenomenon by presenting two cases of linguistic structures that unambiguously express implicit de se propositions—the gerundive complement of verbs of propositional attitudes and Japanese evidentials.
