Abstract

In this chapter, we demonstrate that the reference of proper names is also context-dependent. We do so by discussing a linguistic puzzle originally formulated by Frege. We then discuss how the meaning of proper names can be captured in a two-dimensional framework that distinguishes the dimensions of content and character. We conclude by briefly reviewing some of the philosophical implications of this analysis.
