Abstract

Women working in male prisons and jails will provide the reader a firsthand view from the trenches. Beginning with a brief history of how, when, and why women entered into the field of corrections, the author, a former student, current practitioner, adjunct professor, and future consultant describe what it took and what it takes to be effective and relevant in changing deviant behavior in those incarcerated. Much of what the author explains is then reiterated and affirmed by one of America’s most recognized and respected female professionals who provides her insight into the strengths and weaknesses women bring to corrections. The chapter culminates in a discussion on the important role women play in advocating for supporting the participation of women on both side of the bars. This chapter is written to inspire readers interested in working in prisons and jails and to acknowledge and give appreciation to those who have forged the path that made it possible for women to do so.
