Part of the Culture and Religion in International Relations book series (CRIR)

The chapter analyzes the consolidation of ultramontane and papal mobilization in Latin America from a transatlantic and transnational perspective. Firstly, the chapter offers an historiographical account of the transnational dimension of the mobilization for the pope in the nineteenth century. Focusing on the spread of Ultramontanism in Latin America after the Spanish American wars of independence, the chapter explores the role played by José Ignacio Víctor Eyzaguirre and other Latin American Catholic actors in the implementation of initiatives in favor of the pope.
