Abstract
This chapter relates the development of Arendt’s thought to her education at the hands of Martin Heidegger. This is done by way of the themes of understanding, thinking, Being and thoughtlessness, with particular focus on the development of Heidegger’s thought in relation to Nietzsche and the connection of Heidegger’s philosophical approach to his religious and political stance. It is argued that Arendt and Heidegger thought with and, more substantially and significantly, against each other. I conclude that despite the prevalence of the belief in the secondary literature and, still more recently, in cinematic releases on the reality of their relationship, the influence of Heidegger upon the thought and development of Arendt’s life is largely overestimated.
