Abstract
This lecture is about the thermodynamics of complexity—thermodynamics as nineteenth century steam engineers would have understood the term. The question of that day was: How do you quantify the amount of mechanical work that can be extracted from a given amount of energy? Entropy was of course the key concept. Entropy, or more properly, the lack of entropy is a resource for doing work.
