Abstract
This section starts with a discussion on the current situation of the Internet of Things networks regarding their electromagnetic (EM) environment wherein they work, by providing facts regarding trends in the EM noise rise globally and known issues that this rise has caused in real IoT networks. Two major sources of EM risk have been identified: the EM interference and the multipath propagation. Since direct measurements of IoT systems with respect to these two factors pose a tremendous challenge in real environments, the author proposes separate performance testing methodologies with the use of an anechoic chamber and a reverberation chamber that serve as emulators of real-life environments. The methodologies are formulated as systematic step-by-step instructions for users who wish to come to know how immune their radio system (of any kind, in fact) is to these two adverse phenomena, including aspects such as the verification of EM isolation during tests, the preparation of test scenarios, the measuring equipment and DUT (device under test) settings, the dynamic performance range seeking and the recording of results through their final interpretation.
