Abstract

The chapter is opened by an exhaustive presentation of the smart metering concept and associated transmission-related requirements. Standardization processes in IoT domain are also described with an emphasis on initiatives such as the IEEE P2413 standard or three ETSI documents regarding architectural and applications-related aspects of Low-Throughput Networks (ETSI GS LTN 001-003). One of the subchapters is devoted to spectral issues such as frequency bands, maximum radiated powers (EIRP), duty cycles, etc. in the light of ETSI, ERC and European Frequency Allocation Table (March 2019). The last subchapter refers to so-called polite medium access techniques recommended for use in IoT networks, among these mechanisms being the following: the clear channel assessment (CCA), Adaptive Frequency Agility (AFA) or Listen Before Talk (LBT).
