Abstract

Today, up to two thirds of tracheotomized children are less than 1 year old, including many long-term tracheostomy tube carriers. The differences between pediatric tracheotomies in terms of indications and performance compared to tracheotomies in adulthood are worked out. Before the reader begins with the individual surgical steps in performing pediatric tracheotomy as a conventional surgical method or as a star plastic surgery, it is essential to take note of the description of the special features of the child’s anatomy and topography in this chapter. Various methods and their indications as well as sources of danger and complications are described in detail. Due to the small airways, the small diameter of the tracheostomy tubes and the inability of infants to make themselves felt, postoperative situations can quickly become life-threatening. The reader is familiarized with the specific problems of aftercare in childhood.
