Abstract
For the young doctor as well as for carers and relatives, the multitude of different tracheostomy tubes seems confusing at first. There are approx. 4000 different tracheostomy tubes, which differ in numerous features, such as material, size, length and type of design. Various factors play a role in the decision to use a tracheostomy tube, whereby the focus must always be on individually fitting provision of the patient. The reader will find numerous concrete and product-neutral decision aids, also with regard to the underlying diseases, the type of tracheotomy and the rehabilitation goal as well as tracheostomy tube-related criteria for the suitable sizes for adults and children, materials used and their properties, blocking options, inner cannulas, speaking valves, sieving and the options for oxygen connection. Numerous illustrations provide for better understanding. Care, cleaning and disinfection are described in detail with practical tips.
