Abstract

This chapter explores both the female and male characters of Tiempo de silencio and Tiempo de destrucción with special emphasis on the male ones, to understand their difficult road to happiness. It particularly studies how the idea of hegemonic masculinity by R. W. Connell has a strong impact on their identity development and the role it plays into their pursuit of freedom and joy. Through an analysis of their behavior and thought it focuses on the reasons for their unhappiness, relying on those related to how patriarchy defines masculinity. Later the chapter reflects on the Freudian influence present in Martín-Santos’ character construction, applying one of his theoretical essays on love and sex to the different couples in his creative writings.
