Abstract

The impact of the immediately post-war offensive of the NAM on the edifice of New Deal reformism is felt as the conservative resurgence reaches its zenith. Conservatives score their first major policy success in limiting the post-war rights of labor in the Taft-Hartley Act of 1946 and in rejecting the International Trade Organization in 1948. Despite this, there is evidence of ‘moderation’ in the NAM over labor rights, and the NAM retained an internationalist mindset on the matter of aid in the Marshall Plan (1948) and over membership of the United Nations.
