Abstract
Natural and man-made emergencies and disasters that impact communities across the United States often begin locally but frequently require assistance from governmental agencies. A systems framework for preparedness and response across traditional and nontraditional medical and public health stakeholders, including community organizations, schools, and other partners in municipal planning, is essential for ensuring the readiness and resilience of communities. All nurses and health care providers (HCPs) should be aware of the local, state, and national laws and regulations that impact preparedness, response, and recovery. A greater understanding of the laws that direct governmental interaction allows nurses and HCPs to better leverage resources to promote preparedness, response, and recovery.
