Abstract
The life of John Winthrop, the Younger, is presented in the context of his progress as an alchemical adept. He collected the finest library in New England in the 17th century and alchemical books were the dominant genre. He was in communication with most of the working alchemists of his time and especially admired John Dee. He traveled throughout the European world and made friends wherever he went. By the time he immigrated to America he was a recognized adept and was able to apply the principles of alchemy to his daily activities. He also established himself as an Assistant of the Massachusetts Bay Company.
