Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide. While COPD is mainly a chronic disease, a substantial number of patients suffer from exacerbations (Eur Respir Rev, 27(147), 2018). Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) plays an important role in the treatment of acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) as well as in severe stable hypercapnic COPD. The following chapter will give an update on NIV in acute and chronic COPD patients. Therefore, a systematic literature search in the PubMed database was performed including clinical trials, meta-analysis and reviews published between January 2017 and March 2019.
