Hunting, Foraging, and Fishing for Food as Place-Based Learning

This chapter is an introduction to Place-based Learning for the Plate and outlines the purposes, contents, and approach of the volume. The main purpose of this book is to consider hunting, foraging, and/or fishing for food as unique forms of place-based learning. These chapters are written by a range of authors, including individuals who forage and gather, hunt, and/or fish for part of their food, whose lives have been influenced by these practices, and those who are involved in research and advocacy within such communities. A number of the authors identify as place-based educators, and write their stories around themes of intentional living as individuals making connections between everyday life, whole food processes, and relating with the more-than-human world. We hope this book will stir the ecological consciousness of readers and inspire fresh trajectories of thought regarding connections between humans, places, food, hunting, foraging, and fishing, and that it might encourage all of us to lean more deeply into our relationships with our places in the more-than-human world.
