Abstract

Ecotourism is a responsible form of tourism to natural areas aiming to protect the environments and its resources, promote environmental awareness, and bring economic benefits to the hosting communities. Despite its potential, critics to ecotourism debate whether this represents a preferable alternative or not to other form of tourism, both in terms of sustainability and economic benefits.

We conducted a general examination of the available data about ecotourism activities on a global level, comparing ecotourism to other forms of natural resource uses.

We conclude that well-managed ecotourism is a valid conservation tool as it has been able to promote the protection of natural resources as well as generate relevant economic benefits which have led to the establishment of new protected areas and encouraged central governments to fund various conservation programs.

We believe the correct management by the governments and institutions is fundamental to achieve the goals set by tourists. Moreover, travelers must increasingly possess an ethical and responsible profile and look at the journey as a cultural enrichment and at its quality rather than its quantity of experiences.

Each one of us has a responsibility toward the environment and the local communities.
