Abstract

The findings presented particularly in this chapter of this book are based on field research which was carried out in Greece, Germany, Italy and Bulgaria. This chapter established the corresponding national contexts, by examining both the respective legal status and history of irregular migration. The chapter breaks with commonly held notions of transit versus destination countries, as southern Europe is often seen as a destination rather than as a transit region. Irregular labour markets in Greece and Italy prove advantageous for irregular migrants who have come to Europe is search for employment, which is often more difficult in the highly formalised economies of Germany of the European north.
