Part of the book series: Fungal Biology ((FUNGBIO))

Abstract

For decades, Dendrobium plant-associated fungal endophytes have been studied as “bio-factories” of multifunctional bioactive compounds. Among the crude extracts and their substances purified from the fungal biomass or growth medium, most of these have been applied for antibacterial activity extending from modest to powerful once tried on the other microbial strains resistant to the antibiotics presently in practice. In this review, we have accumulated the current data on dynamics of endophytic fungi isolated from Dendrobium plants that produce multifunctional metabolites with antibacterial activity as well as promote plant growth. This chapter aims to capture the full range of studies conducted on orchid transformation through endophytic microbes with a view of providing new perspectives for future plant–microbes interaction investigations.
