Abstract

Fungi are the most common category of organisms that can be found in both natural and human-made environments. They are involved in many important processes like plant diseases, animal and human health, and various other ecosystem functions. However, because of their wide forms and habitat, there identification and differentiation is difficult. Having an efficient system for species-level identification system in fungi could significantly support the better treatment fungal diseases and help to monitor their distribution. One of the most emerging and trustable method of fungal typing is DNA barcoding. It is a potent approach for fast and sensitive method for identification of fungal species, thus guiding biodiversity and ecological studies. This chapter describes various milestones in DNA barcoding techniques to achieve higher sensitivity in fungal identification. Also, latest tools and softwares that have been used for fungal genotyping and the databases that maintain the identification markers are also described here. Besides this, the new biotechnological tools that have helped to create engineered fungal strains in order to modify them for various commercial purposes have created importance for characterization. Such methods along with successful examples are also described in this chapter.
