Abstract

Teachers do not differ from other persons as far as their moral agency is concerned. They are bound as is everyone by a duty to behave ethically, though admittedly few of us attain this ideal the whole time. Teachers are as fallible as anyone else. In this chapter, the ethical challenges that teaching as a specific professional activity may confront will be discussed. Over and beyond the ethical challenges that all teachers may face qua teachers, the move from passive to active learning significantly changes the balance in the teacher-learner relationship. With this change come new challenges or at least new emphases. Consistent with the goals of this book, the focus of this chapter will be on the ethics of teaching as it differs in the education of future doctors.
