Abstract
Modelling a problem requires us to break it down into its constituent decisions, requirements and its data. This process is illustrated in four small examples: “Boats and Docks”, the “Knapsack” problem, the “Assignment” problem and the “Travelling Salesman” problem. Arrays are introduced as a way of separating the generic model of the problem from data associated with specific instances of the problem.
