Contaminants in Agriculture

Abstract

Agriculture is an important activity that generates food, revenue and benefits any country economically. Third-world states mostly sustain on agriculture and generate revenue using it. Moreover, the rapid increase in the world population requires efficient agricultural practices to meet the food demand in the coming years. However, improving agricultural practices and increasing the agricultural yield mean high amounts of agricultural waste. Therefore, in order to meet the food demand in the coming years, we need to develop sustainable agricultural practices that work on the principle of maximizing the benefits and reducing the waste. Agricultural waste comprises crop litter (harvests), animal litter and animal feed from animal farms, fruit and vegetable litter from processing units, field runoff wastewater and much more. The more stringent the agriculture, the more waste it shall generate. Therefore, good practices should ensure timely disposal and treatment of the generated waste. Management practices should work on the principle of the 3R approach that refers to reduce, reuse and recycle. Sustainable agriculture and good planning strategies ensure that policies that lower waste generation and favour reusing and recycling of waste are appreciated.
