Abstract

This offers an overview of the main themes to be addressed in the book: the work of George Moore, the specific notion of literary rewriting as a process of post-publication revision and reissue, and the contribution that pragmatic theory can make to our understanding of the relationship established between a literary text and its readers. It gives some initial context to Moore’s work, particularly in relation to the transition between what might be termed broadly ‘realist’ and ‘modernist’ literary styles. It argues that attending to different published versions of Moore’s works is important in any assessment of his contribution to that period in literary history.
