Carotid Artery Disease

Abstract

Carotidynia is defined by pain and tenderness along the carotid artery centered at the bifurcation. When coupled with imaging findings of perivascular inflammation, it has been termed ‘Transient Perivascular Inflammation of the Carotid Artery’ or TIPIC syndrome. This chapter describes the history behind the condition and discusses diagnostic test results, imaging findings and associated clinical demographics and risk factors. In addition, diagnostic criteria for TIPIC syndrome are discussed, as well as treatment options and prognosis.
