Abstract

On returning to São Paulo in late 1950, Tiomno encountered a Physics Department which was quite different from the department that he had experienced prior to his 2–½ years at Princeton . When he left USP, in February, 1948, it was considered to be the principal physics center in Latin America, and an important nexus for attracting talent to the field; but by the time of his return, it was without leadership, and full of intrigues and internal conflicts. This was mainly due to the loss of its earlier academic and intellectual leaders
