Abstract

This chapter looks at the technologies that enable Digital Transformation. It starts with a brief history of the key technologies behind Digital Transformation. Then some changes in computer and communications hardware are reviewed briefly. Next, changes in the software environment that have led to enterprise applications, and individual productivity software, are addressed. Office Automation, Home Automation and Factory Automation are outlined succinctly. The emergence of the Internet and the World Wide Web is described concisely. The path of progress from embedded software, robotic products and smart products to the Internet of Things is related. The final subject addressed is Big Data and Analytics.
