Abstract
This chapter builds on the last, demonstrating how phonemes join together to create streams of sounds which form words and sentences. Word-level features such as assimilation, elision, stress, and unstress are considered, followed by sentence-level features like intonation and sentence stress. This is done from the point of view both of speaking and listening skills. A discussion about how much English language teachers should focus on word and sentence-level pronunciation is included, along with a range of classroom activities for teaching pronunciation knowledge and skills. Consideration is given to receptive and productive competence and the role of intelligibility in teaching and learning. Readers are encouraged to consider how decisions are taken over what features of suprasegmental phonology to include in a syllabus, given the changing role of English around the world.
