Abstract

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea is a common, and underdiagnosed, sleep disorder in children. While no clear gender predominance exists, it is crucial that children suspected of sleep apnea due to nighttime snoring symptoms and/or daytime deficits and physical exam findings be evaluated with polysomnography. The first line treatment remains adenotonsillectomy but other non-surgical treatment options do exist. Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea can lead to hypersomnia, however there are numerous other etiologies of hypersomnia including insufficient sleep, sleep fragmentation, and central disorders of hypersomnolence. The pediatric population can have more subtle findings for these disorders, thus thorough history taking is required to ensure accurate diagnosis.
