Abstract

Hermeneutics—the art of interpretation—is based on those fumbly grace notes that can come from “a consciousness that . . . leave[s] the door ajar,” the grace, shall we say, of “experience” properly named. This chapter explores that art in relation to the “stubborn particularity” of experience and to the insight into the dependent co-arising and passing away of things. Wendell Berry’s citing of the title phrase is then used to link these considerations to our current ecological circumstances and the grief we are enduring therein.
