Origin of Mud Volcanoes

Abstract

In this chapter, the origin of mud volcanoes in the Black Sea region is considered. This question has been debated for more than two centuries. Voskoboynikov and Gur’iev ( 1832 ) were the first researchers to study the Taman mud volcanoes; they proposed that the existence of mud volcanoes could be explained by the increasing pressure of gases due to their vertical migration into the sedimentary strata. Abikh ( 1840 ) put forward a fundamentally different idea by connecting mud volcanoes with lava volcanism, deep faults, and magmatic foci as a whole.
