Abstract

One might suspect that the positive effects of freedom of political association are so obvious that at least highly developed democratic states could move toward this freedom more or less by themselves. After all, this freedom is about nothing less than a hitherto withheld fundamental right, about a more meaningful experience of politics, about overcoming a global war, and about the future of political civilization.
