Abstract
The presence of a cataract in an infant or child does not always indicate the need for surgical removal. The components of the preoperative examination aid the surgeon in determining the visual significance of the cataract and whether surgery is required. The exam can also help determine the presence of other comorbidities, which can help guide the need for further laboratory or genetic testing.
