Abstract

In this chapter, the basic concepts on the calculation of the scuffing load carrying capacity of cylindrical, bevel and hypoid gears are discussed, but according to the integral temperature method . For all these gears, the fundamentals of Blok’s theory are then converted in terms of integral temperature , which mainly depends on the weighted average of the local values of the flash temperature distribution along the path of contact . All influence parameters are reconsidered in terms of integral temperature instead of flash temperature , including the mean coefficient of friction . The permissible integral temperature is then determined and compared with the scuffing integral temperature in order to define the corresponding scuffing safety factor . A large part of the chapter is reserved for the procedures to calculate the scuffing load carrying capacity of the aforementioned types of gears in accordance with the ISO standards , highlighting when deemed necessary as the relationships used by the same ISO are founded on the related theoretical bases. Finally, a question is asked about the use of flash temperature method or integral temperature method for assesment of the scuffing load carrying capacity of the gears.
