Abstract

The chapter presents the study’s approach, methodology and goals. Here, the sample and the qualitative approach chosen to analyze whistleblowing platforms are presented. The following research questions are introduced:

  • RQ1: How can existing whistleblowing platforms be classified?

  • RQ2: How do digital whistleblowing platforms perceive themselves and their work compared to WikiLeaks?

  • RQ3: Do digital whistleblowing platforms perceive their work as journalism or activism?

Overall, the study is based on analysis of twenty-one whistleblowing platforms and semi-structured interviews with managers, journalists and editors of the platforms.

Notes

  1. 1.

This platform was included nevertheless because it represents a particular case of application of the principle of whistleblowing platforms. Die Zeit was one of the first newspapers to implement such a service (even before GlobaLeaks and SecureDrop were launched) with a system they coded internally and that is still in service.
