The Citizen in Teaching and Education

Abstract

Responses from focus group interviews with students who attend schools with cultural orientations and who follow on programmes in preparation for university are presented, discussed and compared. Similarity of responses from the national groups, particularly the concern expressed about the extent of racism and sexism in society, as well as clear and critical class analyses, is identified. There was consensus about the importance of Citizenship Education but a perceived lack of the “every-day knowledge” which students considered necessary to survive. Teachers are criticised as often weak or thoroughly disinterested in their students as learners and as people, and the disparity between school provision and ethos is highlighted.
