Abstract
Responses from the focus group interviews with students on theoretical programmes mainly in preparation for university are presented, discussed and compared. Often eloquent and with awareness of international as well as local contexts, there is a significant consistency of responses and insights between the countries and the genders. Sensitivity to the inequality of social conditions is shown in both countries, as is the impact of such inequalities on life chances and the ability to become socially engaged, and it becomes clear that the students are aware of their privileged position.
