Abstract
Responses from the focus group interviews with students on vocational programmes in vocational schools are presented, discussed and compared. It is noted that students responded to questions with interest without elaborating on their answers unless specifically encouraged to do so. In both countries, there were clear and well-articulated perceptions of unequal and unfair barriers to civic participation and personal success. It was perceived that many of the hindrances to success could be overcome by hard work, determination and personal effort. Little enthusiasm for political activity and participation was apparent in either country and none of the students appeared to be particularly impressed with schooling in relation to citizenship. It is noted that any differences in national group responses were less pronounced than the gendered differences.
