Abstract

This chapter reviews and summarises the principal debates and findings of research on British society carried out in the period of expansion from 1945 to 1979. Research activity is mapped onto the various departments in which it was carried out. Topics covered include theoretical debates on structure, function, conflict, and action, and empirical research on class and stratification, community and kinship, race and ethnicity, crime and deviance, work, industry, and organisation, and religion.

Notes

  1. 1.

In the same year that Lockwood published his critique, Tom Bottomore worked with Austro-Marxist Maximilien Rubel, then at the Sorbonne, to publish an influential selection of extracts from Marx (Bottomore and Rubel 1956).

  2. 2.

The Glass study focused exclusively on men. When marriage patterns were explored, women were allocated a class on the basis of the occupation of their father or husband. This was justified in terms of the prevailing domestic and employment conditions of women at the time. This assumption and research practice did not become a major topic of discussion until the late 1970s and will be discussed in a later chapter.

  3. 3.

The first two categories were somewhat misleadingly called ‘traditional’, though Lockwood meant simply the long-established classes of industrial capitalism.

  4. 4.

See also Ronald Blythe’s (1969) report on the Suffolk village of Charsfield, to which he gave the pseudonym ‘Akenfield’.

  5. 5.

A similar view is given in Moore’s (1945) autobiographical account of pre-war Tewkesbury.

  6. 6.

The work of the ICS has been critically examined by Jennifer Platt (1971).

  7. 7.

The relocation of the Bird’s workers from Birmingham to Banbury was studied by Michael Mann (1973).

  8. 8.

Hannah Gavron was the daughter of Tosco Fyvel and committed suicide before the publication of her book. See J. Gavron (2015).

  9. 9.

This argument was enlarged in papers published between 1968 and 1970 and republished in Rex (1973b).

  10. 10.

A more orthodox Marxist account was produced by Vic Allen (1975).
