Abstract

A 65 year old male undergoes a cystectomy for bladder cancer and an ileal conduit is formed. Five days post-operative you are asked to review him. He is tachypnoeic and anorexic. He complains of abdominal pain, diarrhoea and is pyrexial. His sodium is 137 mmol/L, chloride 90 mmol/L, serum potassium 4.0 mmol/L and bicarbonate 13 mmol/L. You note his acidosis.
