Abstract

A 67 year old male is admitted to hospital with self-neglect. He lives alone and has frequent previous admissions with alcohol withdrawal. On admission he looks malnourished, is tachycardic at 110 bpm and hypertensive at 160/87 mmHg. He complains of nausea. His drug history consists of thiamine and omeprazole. His serum potassium is 2.7 mmol/L with serum bicarbonate 32 mmol/L, blood urea 3.3 mmol/L and serum creatinine 47 μmol/L.
