Wet Gels and Their Drying

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Introduction to Sol-Gel Processing

Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the materials obtained after gelation, either from organic or inorganic sols or from polymeric solutions. It addresses their classification according to their structure and their behavior in the wet state. In particular, their shrinking, swelling, syneresis, and aging behavior are described. The drying techniques of wet gels are finally reviewed. They comprise evaporation of their liquid matrix to produce xerogels, and more involved techniques including supercritical drying or ambient pressure drying to produce aerogels, but also subcritical drying and freeze-drying.
