Abstract
For many applications a material such as an inorganic ceramic, made by sol-gel as well as by a more conventional process, must be finally submitted to a thermal sintering treatment. The phenomena of densification and grain growth after crystallization, including abnormal grain growth and their competition, are described. The thermodynamics driving these evolutions and the atomic transport mechanisms permitting them are presented. The various kinetics laws, known as “scaling laws” explaining this competition, are analyzed. The special cases of sintering glasses by viscous flow, hot pressing, and recent flash sintering method are also addressed. All along these developments, the behavior of materials derived by sol-gel processing is given a special attention.
