Abstract
Christians bear considerable responsibility for instigating and perpetuating anti-Semitism. History is replete with ways that theological differences have been used to justify cruelty and scapegoating, but psychological insights, including those of Freud, offer more compelling explanations than theological ones for this rivalrous behavior. While reactions to Freud, who was a secular Jew, continue to inform the responses of religious Christians to mental health treatment, recent efforts at dialogue offer hopeful ways forward.
