Abstract

This introductory chapter presents the topic’s relevance and the structure of the volume. This innovative volume brings together many of the leading scholars in the field to provide the first up-to-date and systematic overview of such (generally understudied) episodes of recall regulation, implementation and discussion. It maps the global incidence and variety of recall processes and reconstructs their origins and purposes. It then goes on to specify the requirements for good design, and to balance the promise against the pitfalls, considering also the potential combination of recall with other institutions, such as impeachment.
